Ethylene-oxide, also known as ethyleneoxide or ethylene-oxide, abbreviated as EO in English, is a toxic, flammable, and explosive organic chemical with the molecular formula C2H4O. It is one of the simplest epoxides. At room temperature and pressure, it is a gas with a sweet odor. At temperatures below 10.7 ºC, it is a colorless and easily flowing liquid with the odor of ether. Its vapor is irritating to the eyes and nasal mucosa, and is miscible with water, ethanol, alcohol, and ether. Its chemical properties are very active, and it can react with many compounds to form explosive mixtures with air, with an explosive limit of 3% -100% by volume. Ethylene-oxide is a highly toxic substance, with an allowable concentration of 100PPM in the air. Inhalation of ethylene-oxide can cause anesthesia poisoning.
Ethylene-oxide is widely used in the chemical industry, especially as an intermediate in the production of various chemicals such as ethylene glycol, surfactants, detergents, etc. In industrial production, ethylene-oxide is used to produce ethylene glycol, polycarboxylate superplasticizer monomers, synthetic detergents, nonionic surfactants, antifreeze agents, polyethers, and ethylene glycol products. The vast majority of ethylene-oxide production is achieved through the separation, purification, and refining of ethylene and oxygen, which can also be used to produce ethylene glycol. Currently, about 60% of ethylene-oxide plants in China are co produced with ethylene glycol plants. There are two main methods for preparing ethylene-oxide: direct oxidation of ethylene and chlorohydrin method.
